* I fell in love the Omnichord after seeing David Bowie
use it on stage .... (more)
The Omnichord is an electric version of Grandma's old
auto harp. Remember those? This came out in the early
1980's and was produced by the Suzuki Music
Company. Push the buttons to get a basic chord
sound, flip a switch and you get moving bass patterns.
Select from 10 different drum rhythms, adjust the
tempo and you're off and running, making music like a
pro. The long copper-colored stripe is actually
something called a "strum plate". This is the feature
that the instrument is known for and unique to
Suzuki. The strum plate changes in response to the
chord buttons and offers various voices like guitar,
piano and vibes. Run your finger across it and it
sounds like you're strumming a guitar. Touch it, hold
a note or two and it sounds like your playing an organ.
There's a lot of variation possible in this machine
when you mix all three sections together - there's the
chord/bass section, the drum rhythms and the lead
voice of the strum plate. While Initially designed for
"beginners" the Omnichord has gained in popularity
over the years with such fans as Brian Eno, David
Bowie, Daniel Lanios and the Techno Cowboy. Check
out The Ziggy Stardust Omnichord Album and hear
how this instrument can be used while recreating
Bowie's classic album...
